When the stock market is near — or at — record highs like it is today, traders and investors will inevitably wonder whether or not we are near a market top.

Especially with economic data cooling as it has been, it may be increasingly tempting to sell a little — or a lot — with the aim of buying again at some lower price.

Unfortunately, timing market tops is hard.

Sure, you may not have to pinpoint the exact top and subsequent bottom to improve your returns.

But you have to come pretty darn close.
