Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has been at risk due to the ongoing government shutdown.
Also referred to as the food stamp program, SNAP provides approximately $8 billion in food assistance monthly to about 42 million people.
To better understand the scale of this program, we can take a look at grocery sales. Grocery stores accounted for $76.7 billion of retail sales in August.
