Stock buybacks are rising. Theyโre also not really rising.
According to new data from S&P Dow Jones Indices, S&P 500 companies bought back $877.5 billion worth of stock in the 12 months ending June 2024, which included $235.9 billion repurchased in Q2.
As you can see in the chart above, the dollar value of stock buybacks have been trending higher.
Does that mean corporations are increasingly eating up the stock market? The short answer is no.
