The University of Michiganβs Surveys of Consumers has captured the history of this bifurcation. As you can see in the chart below from Bloombergβs Michael McDonough, consumer sentiment among Democrats has been stronger than that of Republicans when a Democrat was president. Similarly, Republicansβ sentiment has been stronger when a Republican was president.
