About half of the country woke up on Wednesday disappointed with the results of the presidential election. That dynamic will likely persist over the next four years.

The University of Michigan’s Surveys of Consumers has captured the history of this bifurcation. As you can see in the chart below from Bloomberg’s Michael McDonough, consumer sentiment among Democrats has been stronger than that of Republicans when a Democrat was president. Similarly, Republicans’ sentiment has been stronger when a Republican was president.

Democrats fell better when a Democrat is president. Republicans feel better when a Republican is president. (Source: @M_McDonough)
