The big publicly traded U.S. companies conduct a significant amount of business outside the U.S. This is one of the major ways the U.S. stock market is not the U.S. economy.

Due to the flexibility in financial reporting requirements, there is no perfect way to precisely measure the revenue that publicly traded companies generate in the various regions in which they operate. But Goldman Sachs analysts attempted1 to do exactly that in a research note published on Monday.
